[news] SKorean actor Bae Yong-joon cuts Japan tour due to illness

SEOUL : South Korean actor Bae Yong-joon was forced to cut short his promotional tour in Japan on Friday after his health took a turn for the worse, his agency BOF said.

Bae who was scheduled to stay till Sunday, was overworked and had to cancel several events and return to Korea.

He has been resting since his return and his health has shown improvement, Bae’s agency said. However, he will undergo a medical checkup to see whether he needs to be hospitalised.

The star was in Japan to promote his travel book “A Journey in Search of Korean Beauty” and the animated version of the hit television drama “Winter Sonata” which he starred in.

Last month, Bae was hospitalised with sepsis, a blood disorder, while promoting his book in Korea. The illness is believed to have been caused by extreme fatigue and stress.

The 37-year-old actor shed more than 10 kilograms during his travels around the country for the compilation of essays on Korean culture and travel.

According to KBS Global, the book has topped the travel book bestseller category in major bookstores in Korea and has gone into its tenth printing in just seven days after its launch.

Top Hallyu star Bae Yong-joon will visit the hospital on Monday to receive treatment for overexhaustion, a representative for the actor said.

Bae's latest trip to the hospital comes in less than three weeks since September 19 when he collapsed from early stage sepsis believed to be caused by overwork and stress.

The 37-year-old actor had been advised to rest but left the hospital five days later to hold promotional events for his new book and the animation version of hit TV series "Winter Sonata" in South Korea and Japan.

An official at BOF Entertainment reassured that Bae is "not experiencing any symptoms different from the first time" and may have overstrained himself again attending the recent promotional events.

"He will concentrate on recovering his health now while undergoing tests and treatment," the official told Asia Economic Daily over the phone.

His agency had said earlier that doctors had told the actor was in need of absolute rest, citing his sharply low levels of blood-sugar and blood pressure.

Bae held an event to promote his photo essay "Discovering the Beauty of Korea" on September 22 in Seoul and then a week later in Tokyo. The previous day, he met with fans in Japan again at the Tokyo Dome with actress Choi Ji-woo to promote "Winter Story~ Another Story~" set to air on October 17.

He was set to stay in Japan till Sunday for additional photo shoots and meetings but cut short his visit and returned to Korea on Friday.

[news] Beauty of Korea read by Yonsama

source: Asia Economic Daily
2009.10.05 12:24

A Korean cloth-wrapper, a samulnori (traditional Korean percussion group) and Mr. Bae Yong-joon went onto stage at the Tokyo Dome. A celebratory event was being held at the dome on September 30 for the publication of “Discovering the Beauty of Korea”, Bae's essay on traditional Korean culture experience published September 23 in Korea. Like the previous day’s event for the premiere of animation “Winter Sonata~ Another Story~”, 45,000 fans filled the seats but the atmosphere was much more serene with traditional Korean music playing in the background.

After a video about Korean culture, such as Kyongbok Palace, traditional Korean-style houses and pottery, was shown to the audience, Bae appeared from beneath the stage with a stone pagoda from Miruksa. He greeted the fans saying, “I wrapped up a long, one-year journey. It is a relief to be able to tell you I had a good time.” Of the book “Discovering”, he explained: “The book contains pictures of how I changed while experiencing the beauty of Korea throughout my journey. I was born and raised in Korea but I never really knew the beauty of Korea. By experiencing it, I felt the passions I had forgotten about, come alive within me again.” Then he recited a passage from “Discovering”, a collection of thoughts he wrote down at the Miruksa Temple in Iksan, North Jeolla Province, which drew a big applause from the audience.

Next, lacquer artist Jun Yong-bok, who taught Bae about lacquer in the actor's book, came up on stage and shared an anecdote from their production process. “It was impressive how he tried to learn how to lacquer with no gloves on, at the risk of getting lacquer poison on his hands.” To which Bae replied, “I thought how dare I put on gloves when he doesn’t wear them. And even if I caught lacquer poison, I thought that would be a learning experience too.” Bae went on to share his affection for traditional culture. “I learned how to combine tradition with modern lifestyle while not throwing tradition away. And I think that is going to inspire me on how I live in the future." Bae shared another anecdote regarding his experience making kimchi for the winter season with hanbok designer Hyo-jae Lee. “Preparing kimchi for the wintertime with other people can be fun and festive, so I'm thinking about doing it every year with my close friends. But I felt like a housewife because the smell of pepper powder stayed on my hands til the next day.”

On stage, Bae also wrote a postcard in Japanese for the fans he calls “family” and put them in a mailbox. He recited a letter he had written in his book which said: “I came back from a long journey. Every time I saw, heard and ate something good, I thought of my family members first. I want to keep on sharing the same dreams with my families.” To this, the fans responded by taking out the traditional Korean cloth-wrapper they had received when entering Tokyo Dome, tied it into a knot and waved while calling out, “Mr. Yong-joon.” Bae responded to the fans’ cheering by riding in a palanquin which circled the first floor of Tokyo Dome. And appearing on the stage for the last time, Bae promised the fans, “I will do my best to live as a shameless member of your family by living as a true person."

The event focused strictly on traditional Korean culture. Staged in between were performances by various artists, including Korean fiddle player Eun-il Kang, Sookmyung Gayageum Orchetra, Korean Traditional Percussion Institute. The fusion performance of a Korean fan dance, B-boying dance and Korean traditional music received a huge reaction from the fans. A proclamation ceremony for “2010~2012 Years to Visit Korea” was also held at the event, as Bae is the publicity ambassador for the cause. Mr. Cham Lee, chairman of KBS (Korea Broadcasting Station) and Mr. Kwon Chul-hyun, the South Korean ambassador to Japan joined Bae in a fan lottery event and presented the winners with plane tickets to Korea and Korean culture experience tickets. The event’s admission ticket was sold at 8,000 yen per person and seats were randomly assigned. The fourth print of “Discovering” has been sold out in Korea and initial 50,000 copies of the book have been sold out in Japan on advance order.

[news] Actor Bae Yong-joon to Have Medical Check

source: The Korea Times
10-05-2009 20:35

Top hallyu star Bae Yong-joon cut short his stay in Japan and returned home earlier than scheduled due to a sudden deterioration in his health, his agency BOF said.

Bae came home Friday, cancelling some events to meet with his fans. He was originally scheduled to stay there until Sunday.

His agency said the actor seemed to have overworked during his stay in Japan to promote his book ``A Journey in Search of Korean Beauty'' and the animated version of the mega-hit TV drama ``Winter Sonata'' he starred in.

Bae, diagnosed with a drop in his blood sugar level and blood pressure, was advised to relax for a while by doctors after his return. He has shown improvement after resting the past days, his agency said, adding he will undergo a medical checkup soon to see whether he needs to be hospitalized.

The 37-year-old actor shed more than 10 kilograms during his travels around the country for the compilation of essays on Korean culture and travel.

Bae fainted on Sept. 17 due to the same ailments he currently suffers from and was hospitalized for five days. He was then diagnosed to be in the early stage of sepsis.

He had been advised by doctors against visiting Japan but pressed ahead with the plan and had a large-scale promotional event in the Tokyo Dome at the end of last month.

All that Korean superstar Bae Yong-joon had to do was smile, and at the end of every sentence he spoke, there were cheers, and even when he was silent there was applause reverberating through the Tokyo Dome on Wednesday afternoon.

Bae is in Japan to promote his book "Travel in Search of Korea's Beauty." Some 45,813 people in the audience were chosen by lottery to buy a ticket to the event, which cost 8,925 yen (W117,000, US$1=W1,179). They seemed happy just to be in the same place as the man they call Yonsama.

Among them was Japan's eccentric new first lady Miyuki Hatoyama, an ardent fan of Korean soap operas. Hatoyama met Bae in the VIP Room for about 10 minutes an hour before the event, and watched the event for more than an hour in a VIP seat.

The first Japanese print run of 50,000 copies instantly sold out, and the publisher is printing more.

Korean Ambassador to Japan Kwon Chul-hyun and Lee Cham, chief of the Korea National Tourism Organization, were also present as a "2010-2012 Visit Korea Year" was declared during the event. Bae is the goodwill ambassador.

Top South Korean actor Bae Yong-joon has cut short a promotional tour in Japan and returned home because of illness, his agency said Saturday, according to Yonhap News.
Bae's agency, BOF, said the actor returned to South Korea on Friday under stress from continued big schedules and events. He was not, however, in serious condition, BOF said.

The Korean actor traveled to Japan Sept. 27 to promote his photo essay book "Travel in Search of Korea's Beauty," which covers broad areas of culture, including cuisine, handicrafts, temples and dress-making. He was initially scheduled to return home Monday.

Late last month, Bae was admitted to a hospital after his blood pressure and blood sugar levels fell sharply. Test results showed he was suffering from the early stages of blood deterioration, but was not in critical condition.

Bae stated last month at a press conference that he lost nearly 10kg during the final days of writing the book from pressure to make his work as flawless as he could.

TOKYO - Bae Yong-joon, widely recognized by his Japanese nickname “Yon-sama,” boasted his popularity in Japan at a party celebrating the release of his latest book in the Tokyo Dome last night.

The event was attended by 45,000 people who waited hours in a lengthy queue. The audience included Miyuki Hatoyama, wife of Japan’s new Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, as well as leading Japanese political and government figures. Mrs. Hatoyama has dubbed herself an “avid fan” of Korean culture - entertainment in particular - which is represented by the phrase “Korean wave,” or hallyu.

Bae, an actor and entrepreneur, was promoting his latest book, “A Trip in Search of Korea’s Beauty,” a compilation of his essays about traditional Korean culture. Its 50,000-book first edition sold out through advance orders on Monday, the day sales began. According to his promoters, Bae took tours around various parts of Korea and experienced traditional cultural activities and food on his own to author the book.

Along with the book publishing event, the Visit Korea Committee, an agency under the Korean government, announced that 2010 through 2012 will be designated a special period for the Japanese to visit Korea.

Lee Charm, president of the Korea Tourism Organization, pledged to tackle transportation issues in Korea, which tourists have consistently complained about.

Bae, who has been named PR ambassador for “Visit Korea,” told the audience about the attraction of Korean food and mentioned the World Food Culture Festival to be held late next year in North Jeolla Province.

Keiko Kurokawa, 68, said she became a fan of Bae after watching “Winter Sonata.”

“My interested in him has stretched to the Korean culture, food, society and history,” she said. She said she has visited Korea five times so far and plans to visit again to take a look around the regions Bae introduced in his book.

Yon-sama rose to hallyu stardom in 2002, as his Korean TV drama Winter Sonata was a huge hit in Japan. Riding the wave of his popularity, local entertainers, movies and TV dramas increasingly gained fans in the neighboring country, especially among elderly women. They say they have been enchanted by the romantic, charismatic qualities of Korean dramas’ male characters. The local pop culture sensation has lured tens of thousands of Japanese tourists annually to Korea.

Japan held a launching ceremony for the Visit Korea 2010-2012 campaign at the Tokyo Dome, Wednesday, with more than 40,000 participants that included Lee Charm, president of the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), Japanese First Lady Miyuki Hatoyama and Korean actor Bae Yong-joon, a superstar in Japan.

“It is extremely meaningful that Japan is joining a tourism campaign to promote Korea to the world,” Hatoyama said in a private meeting with the KTO president ahead of the ceremony.

She expressed a deep interest in the “Korean wave” of culture and entertainment in Japan and other parts of Asia. The Japanese first couple will visit Korea on Oct. 9 at the invitation of President Lee Myung-bak.

The ceremony included a talk show with the KTO chief and Bae, a congratulatory address by Ambassador Kwon Chul-hyun to Japan and a video presentation of Korea’s tourist attractions.

“Korea is planning a host of new projects to attract foreign tourists to Korea during the years 2010-2012,” Lee said.

As a goodwill ambassador of the campaign, Bae said that he was interested in raising the global status of Korean food.

Korea has set up a special committee to prepare for the campaign to attract 10 million foreign tourists to Korea over the next three years. Lee serves as its vice chairman.

The committee is led by Lotte Group’s Vice Chairman Shin Dong-bin. The domestic launching ceremony for the campaign is scheduled for Nov. 11.

It is the third time for Korea to initiate such a campaign. The last was held in 2001-2002 when Korea co-hosted the World Cup finals.

The campaign, first announced last year, is also promoted by goodwill ambassador Kim Yu-na, the 2009 world champion in ladies figure skating.

Hallyu star Bae Yong-joon joined Korea Tourism Organization president Lee Charm in declaring "2010-2012 Visit Korea Year" at Tokyo Dome yesterday in a rare overseas promotion for the Korean tourism industry. The event, organized by Visit Korea Committee, drew an estimated 45,000 Japanese, many of whom had come to get a glimpse of Bae or "Yonsama," as he is popularly known in Japan. The promotion also got a boost from the participation of Miyuki Hatoyama, wife of Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama.

The event was used to make appeals to Japanese to visit Korea by unveiling new tour packages and incentives for those who visit in the next three years. Lee, who also serves as Vice Chair of the Visit Korea Committee, and the 37-year-old "Winter Sonata" actor opened the event by carrying out dialogue with each other in a talk show format about the tour packages and benefits available for Japanese visitors to Korea.

Korean Ambassador to Japan Kwon Chul-hyun followed with a toast which was then followed by a promotional video of "2010-2012 Visit Korea Year."

Lee Charm, the first foreign-born government official in Korea, took the stage once again and addressed various issues and complaints, such as problems of public transportation, which have been raised by many Japanese tourists in the past after visiting Korea.

He also introduced benefits for long-term visitors and various tour packages available to potential Japanese visitors.

Bae meanwhile was adamant in his commitment as a goodwill ambassador to continue to promote Korea as a tourist destination for his Japanese fans.

He has expressed his interest in promoting Korean cuisine through participation in a global food festival the Visit Korea Committee is sponsoring later this year.

Lee recently penned "Traveling In Search of Korea's Beauty," released last week. The book is selling so well in Japan that the publisher is having difficulty meeting orders.

Meanwhile, Visit Korea Committee jointly with KEAYEAST Co. are planning an upscale Korea tour program that includes visits to scenic places across the country. The program will be unveiled in October via www.key2korea.com

[news] "Yonsama" greeted by fans and white handkerchiefs

source: Asia Economic Daily
2009.09.30 19:09

Like a dream come true, “Joon-sang” and “Yoo-jin” for the first time in seven years appeared at Tokyo Dome, the so-called "stage of dreams". A celebratory event for the animation “Winter Story~ Another Story~”, set to air in Japan on October 17, was held at the dome on Tuesday evening.

Seven years since its initial airing in 2002, the KBS TV series “Winter Sonata” still proved to be popular, drawing a sell-out crowd of 40,000. Some 2,500 fans had gathered at the Narita International Airport on Sunday afternoon to greet the two stars Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo who reprised their roles in the animation version.

After tens of thousands of fans that crowded the Suidobashi subway station near Tokyo Dome lined up to enter the venue, a short clip of “Winter Sonata~ Another Story~” and behind-the-scenes footages showing the production process of the animation was played.

In the animation, there were scenes of Joon-sang meeting Yoo-jin as classmates at a high school in Choon-chun and the two missing each other in New York and Paris after a long repeating a series of meetings and partings.

When Bae appeared on stage as the theme song to "Winter Sonata", “From Beginning to Now”, started playing, the Tokyo Dome filled with applause and cheering of the fans. The atmosphere heated up further when Bae and Choi greeted each other with a hug and fireworks sparked up on stage.

Bae, who last visited Osaka in May 2008 to attend a premium event for drama “The Story of the First King’s Four Gods,” talked about the Korean voice-over work. “It is really difficult to express all the emotions with just my voice, but I was very glad and happy to live as Joon-sang and Min-hyung once again.”

Choi also shared her sentiments. “Sometimes I envy Yoo-jin because she was able to hold onto her high-school first love until she became an adult.” She also made the fans laugh asking them, “Wouldn’t it be great to have a fantastic boyfriend like Joon-sang?”

Bae and Choi also pleased fans when they went up to a live dubbing stage and re-enacted a scene from “Winter Sonata~ Another Story~” where high-schoolers Joon-sang and Yoo-jin take a walk in the woods and decide to become friends.

The highlight of the day’s event was during the finale. As Bae and Choi flew inside Tokyo Dome in separate air balloons to greet fans, thousands of fans all took out white handkerchiefs to wave and express their affection toward the two stars. Also present at the event were singer Kang Yo-hwan, who voiced the role of “Sang-hyuk” in the animation, newcomer Lee Sena who played “Chae-rin” and Lee Young-yoo, who played Yoo-jin’s sister “Hee-jin”.

“Winter Story~ Another Story~” will start airing October 17 on DATV, an exclusive Korea-Asia entertainment contents channel launching October 1.

An event celebrating the publication of Bae’s recent photo essay book “Discovering the Beauty of Korea” will be held Wednesday afternoon at Tokyo Dome. For fans who were unable to buy tickets, the two-day event at Tokyo Dome will be shown via satellite at theaters throughout Japan.

[news] Stars reprise 'Winter Sonata' roles for 'anime'

source: The Japan Times
Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009

Kyodo News

South Korean actors Bae Yong Joon and Choi Ji Woo, who rose to fame in Japan for their leading roles in the drama "Winter Sonata," expressed hope Tuesday that their Japanese fans will enjoy the animated version of the series to be released on pay TV in mid-October.

Speaking at a news conference in Tokyo, Bae and Choi also spoke of the difficulties they have had doing the voice-overs for their characters, highlighting the differences between acting in front of the camera and behind a microphone.

"I feel as if I've gone back to seven years ago," the 37-year-old Bae said, looking back to the time when the original drama series was first released in South Korea. "I'm thankful that I'm able to feel once again the passion, warmth and happiness of first love which I felt when doing 'Winter Sonata.' "

Bae plays Kang Joon Sang and Choi plays Jung Yu Jin — high school sweethearts separated by a twist of fate and reunited by chance 10 years later before going their separate ways to New York and Paris, and then meeting again in an emotional ending.

The drama was popular in Japan, particularly among middle-aged women, and Bae is known affectionately as "Yon-sama" in Japan.

The "anime" series, which has 26 episodes, will be broadcast on Sky PerfecTV starting Oct. 17.

Will the voices of “Yonsama” and “Jiwoohime” take Japan by storm once again? Sevens years after the initial airing of the hit television series in 2002, the animation version of “Winter Sonata”, the drama that started the Hallyu sensation, will soon air in Japan.

The press conference celebrating the completion of “Winter Sonata~ Another Story~”, set to air October 17 in Japan, was held at Tokyo Baycourt Club on Tuesday. In attendance were the two stars, Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo, who played the lead roles in both the drama and the animation version, as well as some 250 journalists from about 100 media companies.

"(In the animation) What was most difficult was having to express the sense of existence through breath and sound, without saying any lines. I think radio actors are incredible.” Bae said of dubbing for “Winter Sonata~ Another Story~”, which is 30 percent complete.
Choi also shared her story. “It is hard trying to express everything with a voice and in such a tiny place. When I had to act out a running scene, I was running like crazy in the studio. I was embarrassed because there were people outside, but I’m getting used to it now.”

Regarding the drawings of Joon-sang and Yoo-jin in the animated version, Bae commented, “I am very grateful because he looks so young”.

“She looks a lot cuter and prettier than she really is, so I’m having a hard time dubbing because I have to act more cheerful than I did in the drama," joked Choi.

“Winter Sonata~ Another Story~”, a half-hour 16-episode series, tells the story of Joon-sang and Yoo-jin three years after they parted ways at the airport, each leaving for New York and France.

The animation was directed by Ahn Jae-hoon, who directed many animation films including “Dream of a Precious Day” and written by Kim Hyeong-wan who wrote “Superstar Mr. Gam”. Singer Yoo Hye-joon, who sang “From Beginning to Now”, the theme song to “Winter Sonata”, participated as the musical director.

Besides Bae and Choi, actor Ryu Seung-soo reprised his role in the animation as the friend “Yoong-gook”. The role of “Sang-hyuk”, originally played by Park Yong-ha, was voiced by singer Kang Yo-hwan and “Chae-rin” was dubbed by newcomer Lee Sena in place of Park Sol-mi.

A 79-minute DVD containing scenes of the artists dubbing for the animation and other behind-the-scenes footage of “Winter Sonata~ Another Story~” was released on September 18. The animation itself will starting airing October 17 on DATV, an exclusive Korea-Asia entertainment contents channel launching October 1.
