Traditional Clothing Artist Lee Hyojae Promotes Korean Beauty Through Eco-Friendly Fabrics
Written by Kang Kyung-ah
Photographs by Ryu Seunghoo
Right across from Gilsangsa Temple, a place with stone walls covered with verdant ivy attracts your attention. The Hyojae sign in the middle leads you to a pretty little art shop that displays a diverse array of unique cotton cloth items. The door next to the shop invites you to an exciting journey into the splendidly decorated Hyojae, displaying the unique beauty of Korean tradition in perfect harmony with nature. At Hyojae, run by Lee Hyojae, the owner's love for tradition and environment-friendly life unravels to amaze its visitors.

After ascending stone stairs, Lee can be seen exchanging warm greetings with a group of her departing guests. Many different kinds of wild plants including duckweed and fernbrakes are on the both sides of the staircase.
Lee is a hanbok designer who runs Hyojae, a hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) shop. Her childhood led her to choose her career as a hanbok designer. She said hanbok has been around her since birth because her mom had run a hanbok shop. Taking over her mom's business, she has made hanbok for more than 20 years; the hanbok on Korean historical TV dramas such as the "King's Woman" were her handiwork.
Exceptional Talents for Decorating
Called the Martha Stewart of Korea, Lee is also very famous for her excellent decorating skills. Her decorating talents are innate. "Since I was a child, I loved pretty things, such as collecting pretty pebbles in the streams, and I spent most of my time decorating things around me. I love stones and dishes. For me, they are much more valuable than diamonds," Lee said.
Hyojae is full of beautiful and creative decorative items with Korean features, including bamboo baskets, fans made of hanji (traditional Korean papers), traditional small dining tables, brass chamber pots, patchwork with beautiful embroidery on the walls, a stone mortar used as a tea table and many kinds of tea cups and pitchers. Thousands of various traditional and modern dishes in her kitchen make Lee's dish obsession obvious. Lee uses her creative decorating sense to cover unappealing parts of Hyojae, such as nail holes and electric outlets and switches.
Lee said people can find everything made of cloth at Hyojae. Along with other spaces at Hyojae, its art shop on the first floor displays a wide variety of her creations ─ dish clothes, cushions, wrapping clothes, gloves, aprons, clothing, table clothes, tea mats, spoon cases, money bags used on a wedding day, and toilet covers, all of which feature beautiful, delicate embroidery. The hanbok shop on the second floor features an assortment of wedding items, including hanbok with splendid colors, bedding, pillows and trickery and much more. The main material she uses for her decorations is cotton cloth because it's easy to boil, practical and hygienic.

Master in Bojagi Art
From among her diverse living decoration items, one truly remarkable item is bojagi (wrapping cloth). What captivates people upon entering the front door is a batch of colorful bojagi placed on wooden furniture. Various items including wine bottles, baskets, and sneakers are wrapped with bojagi of a variety of beautiful colors and different wrapping shapes.
Lee is fascinated by the charm of bojagi. "Bojagi has long been with us throughout our history. It has been used very practically in our daily lives, such as wrapping and covering things. With recyclable bojagi, we don't need wrapping paper, thus bojagi can save a tree and protect the environment," said the environment-friendly Lee.
Lee adds that bojagi also conveys warm feelings and sincerity between people who give and receive it. Using a wide variety of colors and wrapping shapes harmonized all together, she creates incredible artwork through which she delivers Korean culture and expresses various emotions and seasons. Based on her outstanding expertise in bojagi, Lee published a book on the art. She plans to hold exhibitions on bojagi both at home and abroad, and is enthusiastic about publicizing bojagi worldwide.
Enjoying Environment-Friendly Life
At Hyojae, people can relish the surrounding natural environment. Along with various plants near its entrance, her spacious, immaculate living room connects to a beautiful tranquil garden. At her garden matted with green lawns, Lee grows various wild plants and trees, including corn, ginger, strawberries, cherry tomatoes, hydrangea, and rose mosses. It's very surprising to find that she did all the landscaping on this spacious estate by herself. Dozens of jars and clean clothes hanging on the clotheslines evoke quaint and warm feelings. Sitting on chairs near the balcony overlooking the beautiful Gilsangsa Temple, you are able to enjoy conversation while feeling a cool wind. You can also immerse yourself into nature while walking through the garden with bare feet.
Because Lee likes inviting guests, Hyojae is always full of people, providing a great resting place for them. She enjoys sharing food with her guests and conversing with them. With her love for nature, she is well-known for her healthy cooking. She uses homegrown items in her cooking. Interestingly, there is a room filled with thousands of comic books to read. For Lee, a huge comic book fan, and her guests, this is one of most popular spots to hang out at Hyojae.
Continuous Effort to Foster Korean Tradition and Culture
At Hyojae, Lee offers more than the beautiful interior, charming decoration and masterful landscaping. Hyojae functions as a treasure house promoting Korean culture, where Lee gives lectures on the comprehensive aspects of Korean culture in clothing, eating, and housing. The classes cover various topics such as how to make dishcloth and lotus rice, how to eat Korean food and how to utilize bojagi. Lee emphasizes that, through her classes, people can learn not only about Korean culture but also about the Korean spirit. Her classes are very popular among both locals and foreigners. Many foreigners have visited Hyojae and it's becoming a very popular tourism spot. In particular, foreigners are mesmerized by her performance using bojagi.
With her superb interior design, housekeeping skills, and bojagi art, she has created quite a sensation. A popular TV program followed her and Hyojae's move from Samcheong-dong to Sungbuk-dong a couple months ago. Despite the busier schedule due to all the media attention, she is happier than ever. "My days go by quickly while working all day long. I regard labor as meditation and enjoy every moment of my life. I feel it's my responsibility to decorate Hyojae and further promote Korean culture and tradition through bojagi and books. So I'd like to commit myself to publicizing bojagi art and writing books on Korean culture and my life," Lee said. Along with her three published books, her life goal is to write a total 20 books.
Lee invites you to Hyojae, filled with people who love and appreciate the beauty of Korean tradition and nature. Hyojae is open from 9am to 7pm. It is accessible from Hansung Univ. Station. From there, it is within a 5-minute taxi ride. For more information, call (02) 720-5393.

Bae Yong Joon continued all night creating ceramics.
He was very active, he carried firewood himself.
Even though it was his first time to make ceramics, staff were surprised that he made it very well.
Also, Bae Yong Joon’s best friend, actor Ryu Seung Soo ssi had come from distance and joined him to create ceramics together.
Bae Yong Joon looked so happy having his best friend’s visit.
It is so good to see their deep friendship.

Land Rover Defender SVX (2008)
his new car?!
source:net car show
Land Rover will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a new special edition of the iconic Defender - the SVX. The world's first SVX has been donated by Land Rover UK to the British Red Cross to auction at the ball.
"The Red Cross association with Land Rover goes back to 1954, when Land Rover supplied a vehicle to the British Red Cross for use in Dubai as a mobile dispensary," said James Johnstone, chairman for the British Red Cross Ball. "We are thrilled that Land Rover continues to support our vital humanitarian work today. Funds raised from auctioning this vehicle will go towards the work of the Red Cross in the UK and overseas, which this year has included the UK floods, Darfur Crisis and ongoing HIV work in Africa."
While most of the 25,000 Defenders produced each year are working tools for everyone from farmers and foresters to aid agencies, the SVX is the most stylish and feature-packed version that Land Rover has ever produced.
Special Edition Features
With metallic black paintwork and subtle satin black graphic decals, the Land Rover Defender SVX will be available in both 90 soft-top and 90 station wagon versions. Distinctive exterior features have a contrasting silver finish, such as the unique 'Defender' and 'SVX' badges, tubular side-steps, and the bold surround for the front grille and new, clear-lens headlamps. All vehicles will also feature new, 'diamond turned' five-spoke alloy wheels, a reinforced aluminium front undershield and clear LED rear lights.
To bring the SVX interiors right up to date, they are equipped with custom-designed Recaro front seats, distinctive alloy gear knobs, a new audio system (with subwoofer and USB socket), iPod cradle and Garmin satellite navigation. The soft-top models are especially eye-catching, with a metallic silver tubular cage that supports a tailor-made, removable black fabric hood. This encloses a flat load-space and a spare wheel stowed behind the front seats, reminiscent of the very first open-top Land Rovers. Each SVX model for the UK will also come fitted with an individually numbered plaque, e.g. 001.
"The Defender SVX looks very different to a spartan 1948 Land Rover, but it's still an essentially practical vehicle that will enable you to go almost anywhere," says Phil Popham, Land Rover's managing director. "The new and much more refined diesel engine introduced earlier this year has been a great success with customers, and for those who want the ultimate Defender, we thought that the SVX special edition would be an ideal way to mark Land Rover's 60th birthday."
A total of 200 SVX vehicles will be made available in the UK - 140 two-seat Defender 90 soft-tops and 60 four-seat 90 station wagons. Production of the Land Rover Defender SVX will start in spring 2008, with deliveries to customers starting from early summer for soft-tops and later in the summer for station wagons. Prices will be announced later in the year.

[mumbling...]dropping "God"
Japanese drama "Kami no Shizuku(Drop of God)" has not been getting good viewing rate. 4th episode was aired on 3 feb. and its' rating was 5.0%.
Viewing rate from first to third episodes were 10.3%, 7.3% and 6.2%.
There are postings on net rumoring that NTV may have to decide to cut down some episodes to end the drama earlier than its original plan of 11 epis.
After all, it is a very difficult task to satisfy wine lovers, Jonny's fans, comic fans and a bit of BYJ fans to watch and love the drama.
To be honest, i have only watched few minutes of the first episode so I really cannot tell how good(bad) the drama is.
Korea media already noted that Korean version of the drama will only start shooting in 2010!!! We still have one whole year for the drama to come out!!!
Here are some photos of Seiichi Tanabe acting as Issei Tohmine.
(will YJ play Issei Tohmine?? if he does, he is going to start looking for a perfect pair of eye glasses to match the image of Tohmine...^^ )

Graduation ceremony of BSJ school

Let me remind you that I am not a writing type, and I am never good at these things.
I am sure other talented writers will come back with great work later on.
I would like to note some things here so that I could share a glimpse from BSJ’s final event on Sunday.
+++
The event started with a work by Norita, a make up trailer for YJ’s (possibly?) next work, “Drop of God.”
After the video, satovic appears on stage.
It is always fun part of the event to see how satovic dresses.
At every event, she costumes herself as a heroine from YJ’s work.
Since there are no specific details on “Drop of God,”
satovic costumed herself as something Issei Tohmine loves most,,, wine bottle!!!!
Created a big bottle with cardboard, her face was showing from a hole at the shoulder of the bottle.
We all cheered and applauded at this!!
Later, satovic changed into traditional Korean costume to become Madame Sato-misku from Untold Scandal.
+++
Mr. Sohn was one of the special guests who attended the event yesterday.
He said he had flown back from Seoul in the morning,
he was catching a bad cold but satovic had dragged him out on stage to give us some words.
Mr. Sohn said all the videos brought back memories, but he could not laugh and enjoy.
His memories are not the same as ours, he had to write a letter of apology.
(you all know what it means, he had gone through a lot with BYJ.)
Mr. Sohn said I tried to stop satovic from closing, but she insisted on graduating. He said this is not "graduation” but rather a “drop out.”
But then he added, we never had any proper entrance ceremony,,,(smiles)
Mr. Sohn was presented flowers from a little young BYJ fan, we all sent him big applause.
Without Mr. Sohn, there would be no BYJ nor BSJ in Japan.
Thank you so much, Mr. Sohn!!

Recalling 4 years history of BYJ and BSJ brings laughter and tears.
satovic had noted me beforehand that my photos would come up on some of the videos.
It sure did, not only once but several times,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I had to blush, laugh and cry at the same time.
LL had dedicated many works for us to bring back memories.
It was a pity that she was not able to join the event yesterday.
Every work was touching, I liked the one on TWSSG the best.
I hope eveyone gets a chance to watch it.
Thank You, Thank you so much LL for all the hard work.
(We all missed you at the event!!)
Some of new fans may not know,
satovic was the one who created user’s manual for JOB.
BSJ was the one which started to send love to the needed one rather than sending gifts for YJ on Valentine’s day.
BSJ was the one who created the temporary site when JOB had closed down.
BSJ staff in Japan and U.S. watched over the site 24hours to prevent attacks from hackers.
BYJ’s history in Japan all link to my memories with satovic and BSJ.
It is so sad to see BSJ close now, but I am sure satovic and BSJ’s love for BYJ will last forever.
I hope we could get together to have much fun again.
Thank you satovic. Thank you BSJ.
