President of IMX, Mr. Sohn Ilhyeong talks to Nikkan Sports

If you try to point out one difference between Bae Yong Joon and most other stars is that his attitude for his works has not changed before and after he broke and gained popularity.
With his acting career of 12 years he has only starred in 12 works.
There are ups and downs in an actor’s life and one tends to gain their pace of works while they are still a “popular one.”
He never changes his pace of work.
Year 2006 was mostly concentrated on preparation and shooting for his new drama TWSSG, and not many activities out in public.
How did he spend this one year?
And in 2007 and in the future, which is the direction is he heading to?
President of IMX, BYJ’s Japanese management office, Mr. Sohn Ilhyeong who has firm and close relationship with BYJ has talked to us.

■ style
In year 2006, Bae Yong Joon had visited Japan in summer but other than that he had no public activities.
We received many requests from fans to show more of his works.
But this is his usual pace of work.
Popularity is easy to change, people tend to work more in short time at the pinnacle of their popularity.
But he consistently maintains his pace of work.
In business sense that is not an understandable action, but this is his style.
He is more anxious minded and a perfectionist.
He always does things thoroughly and will not be satisfied with some level of results.
It is already several months since shooting for his new drama has started, but he has spend more than a year for its preparation.
This drama will be a historical fantasy drama and it will include actions with battle scenes.
He had already started practicing martial arts like kendo, and horse back riding from summer of 2005.

■ physical remodeling
While growing his hair long, he has remodeled his body to show dignity of legendary king.
It seems people use muscle-building substance in Hollywood to show muscular body.
But he started from the beginning to build up his body to fit the character.
When there was traditional ceremony with staff and actors in March at Jeju, he looked somewhat fat.
It was because he was actually in middle of changing his body.
He would explain to people, “you need to make the muscles to expand to its biggest size and then make it fit to build proper muscle.”
One month later, he would fit himself to his best size muscle.

For the shooting of the drama, at the beginning there were more of CG(computer graphics) works and it took time for preparation and not much progress at the shooting, BYJ seemed to be pretty upset at the situation.
But when I spoke to him at end of November, he was calm and seemed to be well.
It was period when there were continuous late night shootings in deep mountain area which sometimes hit freezing point.
His voice was bright and say, “I am all right, I am doing well.”

His attitude is just the same in his ordinary life.
Even when he has no work he would fill his schedule.
He would book three hours at physical training or some other lessons, and also book himself where and when he would eat.
We often talk on phone, he would always ask “are you well?”, or “are you eating well?” and he tends to be worried about me.
He does not show his weakness, but he often gets fevers and catch cold.
So that is why, he would ask same things to me.

I am not sure where his stoic comes from.
It may be pressure from his responsibility or his pride….
I believe it is his instinct.
He always say, “Acting is most difficult to deal with.”
It is understandable when you understand him more as a human but that may be one of the reasons that may be making him more stoic.

■ year of turning point
His acting career is one cycle in Oriental Zodiac(12 years).
It is a year of turning point for him as an actor.
His next work has not been decided yet.
He will concentrate on TWSSG shooting until sometime in March, and he will be making next decision later on.
I do not know about his specific goal for the future or what he will be doing in 10 years from now.
We have talked about our dreams and have talked “let’s run a ranch or a farm.”
But until he has completed a work that satisfies himself, I do not think he would stop his acting.
I feel that he is still not fully satisfied with his works.
He may produce a movie or drama as producer and also join in it as an actor.
I have heard that he wishes to do a comedy too.

■ about marriage…
It is not strange for a man to be married at his age, but this will all depend on partner and the timing.
Right now, he has no chance to meet anyone.
He does not acquaint with people in entertainment business, and considering his character getting married with a celebrity may be low possibility.
He approves women working energetically.
He even says “I don’t mind cooking and cleaning after I get married.” It sure will be double income couple.
But considering his attitude, that would not have any effect on his work.
I consider that his marriage will give him a good influence in his life, as he his really lonely at current situation.
